In case you haven’t heard, CNU Colorado is hittin’ the streets! We’ve got lots of events coming up and we’re teaming up with some pretty cool organizations – Architecture for Humanity, WalkDenver, and the Denver New Railvolutionaries to name a few. We also have a new focus for the rest of 2012 and 2013:
T A C T I C A L U R B A N I S M.
Never heard of it? Let me put it this way:
If New Urbanism is Classical music, Tactical Urbanism is Hip Hop.
If New Urbanism is Tai Chi, Tactical Urbanism is Parkour.
If New Urbanism is Michelangelo, Tactical Urbanism is Banksy.
Got it? Okay, okay…for those of you that don’t listen to Wiz Khalifa, do freestyle gymnastics or stencil rats on the sides of buildings at night, let me put it this way: Tactical Urbanism is building community from the bottom up. It’s short-term action that begets long-term change. It’s acting out your brilliant ideas to plant a seed for a course of action. CNU Colorado is bursting at the seams to get involved in this movement and help create positive change in communities throughout Colorado and we hope you’ll join us! Here are some of upcoming TU events we think you’ll like:
Let’s Get Tactical! – Great minds think alike. That’s why we’re teaming up with Architecture for Humanity Denver for this end of summer bash and Pecha Kucha Night celebration to honor…you guessed it – Tactical Urbanism. Come hear from local tactical urbanists and become inspired!
Friday, September 14, 2012 from 6pm – 11pm
TAXI – Freight Building Courtyard (3455 Ringsby Court)
*BYOS (bring your own seat)
Pop Up Picnics – The rules are simple: pick a location, tell your friends, bring some food (locally organic, of course) and have a picnic! Be sure to take a video (iPhone, duh) and tell us where you are, who you’re with, and what you’re eating. For more information…google it!
Sunday, September 16th
Wherever you want!
Better Block Pikes Peak – If you missed out on Jefferson Park Better Block in Denver this past summer, but heard all about it, it’s not too late for Colorado Spring’s upcoming Better Block project. Don’t miss it!
Friday and Saturday, September 21st and 22nd
Pikes Peak Avenue (between Nevada and Tejon)
Park(ing) Day 2012 – Ever heard of this TU treat made famous by San Francisco? Well, it’s happening across the globe on September 21st. Plug a meter for a day and turn that space into anything your heart desires – except, of course, for a parking space!
Friday, September 21st all day
Wherever you want!
38th Avenue Wheatridge – A road diet with back-in angled parking and retrofit cafes where parking spaces used to be. Sound intriguing? Join us for a tour and hear from the City and Designers of the 38th Avenue Corridor Plan.
Thursday, October 11th from 5:30pm – 7pm
38th Avenue in Wheatridge (exact location TBD)
CNU Colorado is also gearing up for some design competitions, including an RTD bus shelter and bike parking, so stay tuned! We are also seeking ideas from our members. Can you think of anywhere in your neighborhood that could use some hands-on, Tactical Urbanism love? If so, tell us about it and we’ll see if we can make all your dreams come true! Oh, and if you haven’t joined our Facebook page, well then, you’re probably not reading this.
Cheers and Happy Fall Everyone,
Cheney B. Bostic
Vice President, CNU Colorado
